I've been on several writing retreats, most involving my college best friend/ life accountability partner. Sometimes we send all our kids off and do a retreat at one of our homes, sometimes we do an AirBnB someplace interesting, and sometimes we go to another writer friends cabin on the lake. We try to go down on a Friday afternoon and come home on Sunday evening.
The best ones seem to be the ones where we bring our own food with us and we cook for ourselves. That way there's no pressure to choose a place that has food near by or good parking. We plan ahead who will bring what and who will do what cooking or clean up.
It's also good when you have a kind of loose schedule. Friday night is for settling in and catching up with each other's lives and writing. Some people stay up late chatting. We rarely write the first night.
I am always up first wherever I go, so I get up and take a walk first thing in the morning and do my journaling. Once my writing friend(s) wake up, then we do a light breakfast and an overview of the day's schedule. The schedule usually includes a couple hours of writing, then a break for snacks and chats, followed by another couple hours of writing, then lunch. Lunch is usually sandwiches. After lunch sometimes there's a brainstorming session or a discussion about writing techniques or tips or sharing of resources. Then a few more hours of writing until dinner. Dinner is the big meal of the weekend.
Depending on the group, sometimes the evening is for watching movies that inspired us or, if there's internet, YouTube videos that have good writing information. Some people stay up late writing or chatting.
Sunday is kind of a wind down day. There's breakfast again, and maybe some more brainstorming. We try to finish up the last of the snacks and sandwich stuff by the end of lunch time. After lunch is for cleaning up and packing our stuff. Some people stay on and write after that for
awhile, and some choose to head on home.
